Compost countdown

There’s still time to have your say about compost, reports SIMON WEBSTER.
It’s important to maintain standards, even when piling up huge steaming heaps of chicken poo and sawdust.
It just so happens that a new draft Australian Standard for compost is out for public review. Anyone in the compost industry (or out of it, for that matter) wishing to read the standard and/or comment on it can do so by going to the Standards website and clicking on DR AS 4454 (Rev).
The main changes to the old standard are higher allowable levels of copper and zinc, says standards committee member, Tracey Colley, of the Consumers’ Federation of Australia.
These new levels may be higher than the levels in some existing state standards, Colley says.
