Aussies are celebrating permaculture on Sunday, and the world has caught on, reports SIMON WEBSTER.
The bad news: National Permaculture Day is no more. The good news: it’s turned into International Permaculture Day.
Sunday, May 6, will a worldwide celebration of self-reliance, with events from California to Cameroon.
“This would have been the fourth year of Australia’s National Permaculture Day but so many other countries wanted to take part that it has become an international festival,” says IPD Australia co-ordinator, Penny Pyett.
“People are fattening their chickens and preparing to harvest their crops. This year’s theme is ‘Share and celebrate’. We want the public to see what we do and celebrate with the movement.”
Events will include:
Permablitzes, in which teams of permies (pictured) transform lawns and nature strips into edible landscapes.
- Open properties, showcasing food forests, natural swimming pools and sustainable homes.
- Talks, films, workshops and kids’ activities.
