Story by

Try this recipe for warming chook mash from our chook expert. It will help keep your chooks happy and healthy.

Chooks will love your leftover porridge, but if you want to make them an even more nutritious brekkie, try this mash which has a better balance of grains. This recipe is for 10 chooks.

4 cups layer pellets or dry premixed mash
1 litre hot water
40g sunflower seeds (handful)
1 cup vegies, any combination of: grated carrot, grated pumpkin, chopped greens (silverbeet, kale, spinach etc)
1 tablespoons oregano leaves, chopped
1 clove garlic, crushed
2 tablespoons vegie oil

  1. Put pellets into a clean bucket. Pour water onto the pellets or dry mash and mix. Let stand for 5 minutes to absorb liquid. Add more water or pellets if required to get a porridge consistency.
  2. Add sunflower seeds, vegies, oregano, garlic and oil. Add more water if needed for a porridge consistency.
  3. Feed mash to fowls. Store any unused wet mash in the fridge in a sealed container and use within a day.
