They may be fussy plants but homegrown avocados will pay you back big time, says JUSTIN RUSSELL.
Avocados are native to subtropical Mexico and Guatemala. The fruit is delicious and packed full of nutrients, but the trees can be fussy. They thrive in a humid climate, prefer relatively still conditions with little wind and, most importantly, are hyper specific about their soil requirements. Deep, fertile, slightly acidic soils with perfect drainage aren’t just preferred, but essential.
