The Victorian city of Ballarat is doing its bit for the food-share movement, writes JESSAMY MILLER.
The Victorian city of Ballarat is playing a key role in the food-share movement with two Food is Free laneways bursting with free produce.
The Ripon Street laneway is lined with boxes and baskets of free garden produce, which is being accessed by more than 100 people each day. It has proved so popular that a second
location at Ballarat’s Western Oval opened late last year.
Organiser Lou Ridsdale grew too much in her garden one year and had the idea of giving it away to passersby outside her home. She started a food-share table and a Facebook page and invited other local gardeners to contribute excess produce and seeds.
The food share is part of the international Food Is Free project (#foodisfree), which has seen further locations popping up across the country.
