Beetroot

Beetroot grows well in all climate zones in Australia, including the tropics. And the leaves are edible!

Likes: Rich soil and regular watering.
Dislikes: Being transplanted; wet, humid conditions.
When to plant/sow in a warm temperate zone: Jan, Feb, Mar, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec
How to start: Sow seeds in compost enriched soil 15cm apart; each corky ‘seed’ is a cluster of two or three seeds so thinning may be needed after germination.
How to grow: Keep moist. Liquid feed fortnightly. Shade in hot weather.
When to harvest: Pick leaves as needed once plants are established. Harvest baby beets at 3–5cm wide or full-size globes 10cm wide.
Pests and diseases: Cercospora leaf spot
