Kohlrabi is not a root vegetable, instead it has a swollen stem that grows above the ground.
Likes: Full sun to part shade; free-draining fertile soil.
Dislikes: Drying out
When to plant/sow in zone:
How to plant: Enrich soil with compost and organic fertiliser. Sow seeds direct or in punnets 5mm deep.
When to harvest: Wait until stem is 5–7cm in diameter – any larger and it becomes woody. Leaves can also be eaten.
Pests and diseases: Cabbage white butterfly, brassica downy mildew.
